The Director/Deputy Director provides vital cross-cutting support to and oversight of the strategic work of CBPP’s nine-person Development team. This senior position reports to the Vice President of Development and works closely with them to create and drive the organization’s fundraising strategy. The team’s fundraising strategy involves a sizeable funder and grant portfolio and an individual giving program; depending on the final candidate’s experience and expertise, they may be given more oversight and management of one or the other. The Director or Deputy Director will be expected to develop deep familiarity with CBPP funders and donors and their giving histories and areas of interest, and will work with the Vice President of Development and other team members to create and execute a responsive fundraising plan that includes collateral development and cultivation efforts.
In addition to serving in a senior strategic and advising role on the Development team, the Director/Deputy Director is responsible for the following:
- Managing a portfolio of foundation funders and/or individual donors and serving as an organizational point of contact.
- Assisting the Vice President of Development in understanding organizational funding priorities and creating and executing fundraising strategy.
- Supporting the cultivation of new and prospective funders and/or donors.
- Managing the Development Associate and the Grant Administrator and Gifts Coordinator, who are responsible for the team’s prospect research, Salesforce data entry and management, and funder/donor acknowledgement functions.
- Serving as the liaison to CBPP's finance team, ensuring grant proposal budgets and financial reports are accurate and meet funder deadlines.
- Collaborating with policy teams to create proposal budgets that reflect organizational priorities and funding realities.
- Working with the Vice President of Development to create and implement moves management processes that maximize our capacity and streamline our cultivation and stewardship efforts.
- Working closely with the Vice President of Development, Manager of Development Communications, and policy teams to identify and create engagement opportunities for funders and donors.
- Ensuring that our development strategy and products reflect the organization's ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Assisting with the writing, editing, and reviewing of donor and funder communications, grant reports, and proposals to ensure they effectively communicate CBPP’s mission, work, and impact.
- Deputy Director: Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of relevant experience working in foundation and/or individual giving fundraising. A relevant advanced degree can be substituted for 2 years of experience.
- Director: Bachelor’s degree and 9-10 years of relevant experience working in foundation and/or individual giving fundraising. A relevant advanced degree can be substituted for 2 years of experience.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills and experience with framing concepts for a philanthropic audience.
- Experience successfully cultivating and soliciting individuals and/or foundations.
- Familiarity and facility with a donor contact resource management database, including use of the data to inform fundraising plans and determine tactics, as well as measure progress against fundraising goals. Salesforce experience and interest in furthering the Center’s design and use of Salesforce is preferred.
- Experience with applying tools like prospect research, relationship mapping, or wealth screens as part of a fundraising strategy.
- Demonstrated excellence in organizational, communication and managerial skills, working across several teams to source information, juggling competing deadlines and being able to quickly reprioritize tasks when needed.
- Commitment to CBPP’s mission to improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people and advance racial equity as part of that work.
- Understanding of the role that racial inequity plays in our society and interest in how fiscal and other types of policies can be used to redress that inequity.
- Willingness and ability to travel 25% of the time for role.
The Center is operating on a hybrid work schedule that includes at least two days per week in-person at our D.C. office. We will consider remote candidates for this position if they are open to regular travel to our office or as needed for funder/donor meetings.
This position reports to the Vice President of Development.
Terms of Employment: Full-time, exempt.
Bargaining Unit Status: This is not a bargaining unit position.
