The California Budget & Policy Center (Budget Center) seeks to hire a Director of Development to oversee the Budget Center’s development and fundraising efforts, including philanthropic and individual donor fundraising strategies, stewardship activities, Board of Directors engagement, and supporting specific partnership efforts with fundraising support. The Director of Development supervises and provides professional development support to a development team of 1-2 staff.
The Budget Center expects that development efforts should be overseen with a public policy-focused, community-centric, anti-racist lens and center investments with funders who share the same values on improving conditions for people from low- and middle-income households, women, immigrants, American Indians, Asian, Black, Latinx, and Pacific Islander Californians, as well as other Californians of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ Californians.

How This Position Advances the Organization’s Work
The Director of Development is a highly valued member of the Budget Center’s growing team with responsibility to lead a development team in crafting strategies across institutional and individual giving. They are responsible for developing and stewarding relationships through regular communications, updates/newsletters, in-person and virtual engagement, and hosting funder-oriented events.
For institutional giving, this includes coordinating with the development team and Executive Director on prospecting plans, management of proposals, grant reporting, deliverable tracking, and general retention of funders.
For individual giving, this includes coordinating with the development team and Executive Director on retaining and growing individual donors through stewardship efforts, work with the Board of Directors and staff, the Year End Appeal, as well as other direct mail and email appeals.
The position supervises a development team of 1-2 staff and works closely with the Executive Director on development and fundraising strategies.

Qualifications for this position include:
- High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree and graduate degree highly desirable.
- Five years of directly related experience.
· Strong technology skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft and Google Suite, organizational/customer relations management (CRM) software (currently using Salesforce), and in-person/online event platforms (such as Eventbrite, Go-to-Webinar)
This position is full-time. The salary range for the position is $130,000 – $180,000 based on experience and skill set. Benefits include:
· Excellent health insurance and dental and vision coverage (100% coverage of premiums for the employee; 90% coverage of premiums for dependents);
· Retirement benefits including a 403b plan, an annual SEP-IRA retirement contribution of at least 5% of salary (most recently set at 10% of salary) beginning after one year of service;
· 12 paid vacation days, 10 paid holidays, and 4 paid personal days annually;
· Paid sick leave and family leave;
· FSAs for health, child care, and transportation costs;
· Annual stipends to cover home office, transportation, and well-being expenses; and,
· Annual allocations for professional development.
In-person, hybrid, or remote work arrangements are available. Budget Center staff are required to be located in California regardless of hybrid and remote work arrangements.
