About the position: Director of Development
FrameWorks Institute is a $7.5 million 501(c)(3) organization currently funded through restricted foundation grants for projects and fee-for-service contracts with partners, primarily nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies. We have embarked on an ambitious plan to deepen and grow our impact and that of our partners that will require major shifts in our existing fundraising strategies. The Director of Development will be a key leader in the expansion and diversification of our funding partners and in securing a substantial increase in unrestricted and less restricted funding for the organization.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in foundation and institutional fundraising; have excellent relationship building and management skills; be a strong strategic thinker and innovator; be intellectually curious, adaptable, and insightful; be knowledgeable about contemporary social movements and policy issues; and be committed to principles of inclusion and equity.
This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C, with the possibility of remote work. Currently, staff are strongly encouraged to work in our DC office at least two days per month. There is an expectation that remote staff will travel to the DC office at least quarterly, at FrameWorks’ expense, for key team meetings. Some other travel may be required for this position.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and lead the implementation of a three-year fundraising and development plan that sets out goals, strategies, and tactics to transition FrameWorks to a new, proactive business model focused on raising significant less restricted funding for broad issue areas.
- Support and partner with the CEO and senior leaders in outreach to and engagement with current and potential funding partners, including strategizing and leading an effective moves management system for the cultivation, solicitation, and long-term stewardship of funder partners.
- Coordinate fundraising moves management plans for partners with the activities of the Engagement team.
- Lead the grant and report writing process for foundations and institutional partners.
- Partner with the Senior Vice President, Operations, in projecting, reporting, and budgeting of organizational revenues.

Experience required
The ideal candidate will possess:
● Eleven years of combined education and work experience in fundraising with a progressive nonprofit social change organization or movement, with 9 years of education and experience above the undergraduate level
● Five years of experience in foundation and institutional fundraising, preferably in multiple issue areas. Experience in fundraising for children and family, economic justice, and health equity issues is highly desirable.
● Demonstrated success in designing and implementing innovative fundraising strategies and practices for a nonprofit organization.
● Demonstrated experience in fundraising around issues related to racial equity.
● Demonstrated success in building and managing relationships with existing and prospective funding partners, including institutional partners and nonprofit social change organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate principles of equity, justice, and inclusion into daily work.
